Research Description:
My research aims at understanding the mechanisms and function of sleep and clarifying the functional consequences of
sleep loss. My lab is productive (over 60 peer–reviewed publications in the last decade) and affords students the opportunity to do fundamental science in animal models using an array of metholodogies. This includes gene expression screening and mapping, mutagenesis, local field potential recordings, unit recordings (more recently Neuropixels recordings) in both head–fixed and freely–moving mice and rats, calcium imaging in waking and sleeping mice, microdialysis and voltammetry for glutamate and various neuromodulators, serial block–face scanning electron microscopy, optogenetics and chemogenetics, and, most recently, Scanned Line Angular Projection microscopy (SLAP2).
