The NTP is a graduate program and therefore only awards a doctoral degree in Neuroscience. Undergraduates interested in studying neuroscience should contact the Neurobiology Major Advisors, their contact information and more information on the major can be found here.
Undergraduate Research in Neuroscience
If you would like to work with a NTP faculty member to enroll for research credits please look at our faculty directory and e-mail the professor to see if they are willing to take students. If they are willing to let you do research in their lab for NTP 699 you need to forward us an e-mail from the professor clearly giving you permission to take NTP 699 with them and then send us the last four digits of your student ID number. For specific questions about NTP 699 please contact the NTP at ntp@mailplus.wisc.edu.
Bioscience Summer Research Programs
Program Dates: May 28 to August 3, 2019
Application Deadline: February 15, 2019 (Applications open November 1, 2018 and can be found here.)
WISCIENCE at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites junior and senior undergraduate students interested in research careers in the biological sciences to participate in the Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program (IBS-SRP). This hands-on research program is designed primarily to give students from other colleges and universities a chance to experience the richness of research at UW–Madison. In addition to their individual research experience, students participate in workshops on research topics of interest, ethics, and career choices.
One of the eight programs of study is neurobiology in partnership with the Neuroscience Training Program. For ten weeks, participants work full-time with NTP faculty and researchers in state-of-the-art research facilities. Areas available for study in neurobiology are very diverse. NTP faculty conduct research spanning the entire breadth of modern neurobiology, from molecular through systems and cognitive, and involving applications that range from single-celled organisms to humans. A distinct advantage of a strong research institution such as UW-Madison is the existence of a critical mass of faculty researchers who collaborate and share common approaches to research questions. For more information on the breadth of our faculty research please look at our faculty directory.
There are no fees or tuition costs. The program provides a $5,000 stipend, full support for travel, housing, health insurance (if needed), and a partial food allowance. Students also have access to campus libraries and facilities.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in an accredited college/university.
- African American, Hispanic, Native American, Southeast Asian, Native Alaskan or Native Pacific Islander, OR students (of any ethnic background) who are McNair scholars, OR students who attend small liberal arts institutions without broad research facilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Students with disabilities are welcome. Accommodations are available! For more information please visit www.mcburney.wisc.edu.
- Preference will be given to students who will have completed their junior year and who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. We are also very interested in students planning to further their science career by attending graduate school.
