The Neuroscience Training Program held its annual Symposium on October 2-3, 2024!
This year, the Symposium offered many opportunities to connect with colleagues across the neuroscience community. The first day included several career panels and professional development workshops, featuring guest panelists and judges from across the country.
The second day included talks from NTP students, a keynote lecture from Dept. of Neuroscience Chair Betsy Quinlan, and posters from across NTP labs.
We additionally held our inaugural Faculty Debate, moderated by Dr. Xinyu Zhao, in which Drs. Darcie Moore and Andre Sousa gave a passionate and scientifically rigorous debate over the existence of Human Adult Neurogenesis. A highlight of their debate was the recognition that uncertainty and controversy are natural elements of science, driving exploration and discovery.
During the closing awards ceremony, the NTP students awarded Dr. Anita Bhattacharyya a teaching award in recognition of her excellent subgroup on “Human Stem Cells”.
The Yin Fellowship Award – this year presented by John Yin, cousin of Tom Yin, to Collin Laaker. Collin is an NTP student in Dr. Zsuzsa Fabry’s lab. To read more, see our Yin Fellowship webpage.
Other awards presented during the ceremony were:
The Best Research Talk, awarded to Spencer Cooke. Spencer is a Year 6 student who spoke about “Neurochemical and circuit heterogeneity of cognition-modulating prefrontal corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neurons.” |
The Best Cellular/Molecular Neuroscience Poster, awarded to Austin Pier, a Year 5 student. His poster topic was “TSC2 regulates RhoA Signaling in Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and Neurons independent of mTOR.” |
The Best Systems/Behavioral Neuroscience Poster, awarded to Miral Abdalaziz, a Year 2 student. Her poster topic was “Phase-locking of beta activity signals the quality of visuospatial memory.” |
Thank you to all those who attended our Symposium and to those who helped make it a successful event! We look forward to seeing you again next year!
