Time to Degree

The average time to degree for NTP Ph.D. candidates is approximately 4.9 years. To help keep you on track for your time to degree please see below for a simplified sample timeline for your tenure in the NTP. First Year

  1. First Semester
    1. Register for required fall courses and choose elective(s) after meeting with the First Year Advisory Committee.
    2. Attend Chalk Talks.
    3. If rotating, plan laboratory rotations and complete 1-2 of these rotations. Turn in rotation evaluations found on our Forms page.
  2. Second Semester
    1. Register for required spring courses and choose elective(s) after meeting with the First Year Advisory Committee.
    2. If rotating, complete laboratory rotations. Turn in rotation evaluations found on our Forms page.
    3. Select your major professor and members of your Advisory Committee by March 30.
      1. Turn in the Student/Advisor Approval Form and Advisory Committee Approval Form to the NTP office for approval by the appropriate committees, both are found on our Forms page.
    4. Schedule an Advisory Committee meeting for no later than the third week of the fall semester.
    5. Fulfill program ethics requirement for the first year.
  3. Summer
    1. Register for NTP 990, Research and Thesis credits with your advisor.

Second Year

  1. First Semester
    1. Work toward completing your Mid-Level Course Requirement and any other courses suggested by your Advisory Committee.
    2. Meet with Advisory Committee and submit Certification Form Part I to the Program Office, found on our Forms page.
    3. Schedule an Advisory Committee meeting for the spring semester.
  2. Second Semester
    1. Finish completing course requirements
    2. Meet with Advisory Committee and submit Advisory Meeting Report to the Program Office, found on our Forms page.
    3. Schedule an Advisory Committee meeting for the Fall semester, plan your Preliminary Exam schedule and request a warrant from the NTP office.
    4. Fulfill program ethics requirement for the second year.
  3. Summer
    1. Plan to complete Preliminary Exam by the end of the summer, request a Preliminary Exam warrant from the NTP office no later than 4 weeks before your exam.
    2. At your Preliminary Exam, complete both the exam warrant and Certification Form Part II, found on our Forms page.

Third Year

  1. First Semester
    1. Meet with Advisory Committee and submit Advisory Meeting Report to the Program Office, found on our Forms page.
    2. Present research proposal at Neuroscience Seminar.
  2. Spring Semester
    1. Complete teaching requirement.
    2. Fulfill program ethics requirement for the third year.
  3. Summer
    1. Register for NTP 990, Research and Thesis credits with your advisor.

Fourth Year

  1. First Semester
    1. Meet with Advisory Committee and submit Advisory Meeting Report to the Program Office, found on our Forms page.
  2. Second Semester
    1. Complete any requirements you have not completed yet.
  3. Summer
    1. Register for NTP 990, Research and Thesis credits with your advisor.

Fifth Year

  1. First Semester
    1. Meet with Advisory Committee to decide format and content of your Dissertation and submit Certification Form Part III to the Program Office, found on our Forms page.
    2. Turn in a Ph.D. Final Defense warrant request form no later than 4 weeks before your defense to the NTP office.
  2. Second Semester
    1. Complete Dissertation and Oral Defense, submit Ph.D. warrant to the Graduate School.
    2. Submit one copy of your thesis to Graduate School and three copies to the NTP office.
