The Neuroscience Training Program is dedicated to promoting education and understanding of difficult topics like racism, bias, and privilege both in scientific research and beyond. Below are resources to further education on these issues that have been collected from webinars, training programs, and independent research.

Personal Stories

For Black Scientists, the Sorrow is Also Personal” – Dr. Kafui Dzriasa’s story about being a trailblazer in the field of psychiatry, but his fears that coincide with being a black academic in America give great insight into today’s world. He discusses the consequences racial bias in science research.

Madison 365 Virtual Town Hall” – Black Leaders in Madison discuss George Floyd’s murder, daily trauma, COVID-19, and other issues that disproportionately affect the black community.

Neil Degrasse Tyson Speaks on Being Black, and Women Scientist” – Neil speaks on being a minority in a white male dominated society, specifically in science.

What I’ve Learned About Being a Black Scientist” – An Ivy League Black scientist discusses privilege and challenges of life that come as being a Black scientist in America, and what his vision is for the future.

Advice for Navigating Academia as a Black Woman” – Kaela S. Singleton is an adjunct professor at Agnes Scott College and a mentor to her students at Agnes Scott College and Emory University. In this interview, Kaela recounts her experience with imposter syndrome and how to navigate implicit bias in academia. She also discusses successful mentor relationships and her hopes for the future of diversity in academia.

What Black scientists want from colleagues and their institutions” – Black academics in science and beyond have curated a list of actions steps that white colleagues can do to create a safer space to have difficult conversations, conduct research, and bring in more diversity to lab spaces.

Mitigating Implicit Bias: Tools for the Neuroscientist” – A group of experts from various specialties of academics put together resources to address implicit biases in academia.

How to Be Anti-Racist – 2020 Election and Beyond” – Dr. Ibram X Kendi, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, author, and activist, is hosting a live Zoom Call on September 1oth at 6 p.m. discussing ways to be actively anti-racist in your daily life.
