UW Madison
The University of Wisconsin-Madison was founded in 1848 as a
public, land-grant institution
and is ranked consistently among the premier research universities
in the country. The University has more than 120 departments
covering
nearly all academic disciplines, with particularly strong representation
in the life sciences. The University's lakefront campus is home
to more than 40,000 students, of whom 10,000 are graduate students.
The campus is large and open, and mirrors the diversity of the
University, mixing athletic fields with state-of-the-art scientific
facilities, greenhouses and barns with libraries and concert
halls.
Only a few minutes from the center of campus, the University
Arboretum includes 1,200 acres of woodland, marsh, and prairie.
Other campus
highlights include the Elvehjem Museum of Art, Babcock Ice Cream,
Allen Centennial Gardens, and the Memorial Union.
