Beta Chapter of Sigma Delta Epsilon - Graduate Women in Science (SDE-GWIS), announces the annual offering of the Ruth Dickie Grants-in-Aid and Research Scholarships. To be eligible, the applicant must be enrolled as a graduate student at the UW-Madison in the biological, chemical or natural sciences (physical, environmental, mathematical, computer, life sciences, anthropology, psychology and statistics), including home economics and engineering. The applicant must also be a member of Beta Chapter/SDE-GWIS.

The major component of the research can be either applied or basic. Exact scholarship amounts will be determined by the Chair of the selection committee and will range from $1,500 to $3,000. For the Grants-in-Aid, two $500 awards will be disbursed. All awards will be available for the academic year 2008-2009 and will be announced in July 2008. Members may apply for only one award in any given year. Applications must be received by SDE-GWIS by May 1, 2008.

Ruth Strathearn Dickie, a life member of SDE-GWIS, died on December 24, 1993 at the age of 80, at which time she was Professor Emeritus at the UW-Madison. She was also Director of Food and Nutrition Services for the UW Hospital for 27 years before retirement in 1983. She received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Food and Nutrition at the UW-Madison, joined the faculty in 1942 as an instructor and become a full professor in 1981. Professor Dickie became a member of SDE-GWIS in 1947 and served in most offices of Beta Chapter, including President twice and as National President in 1978-1979. Her Support and dedication to the graduate education and research efforts of women in the sciences was expressed in her personal and professional life. She cared passionately enough to leave a generous endowment to Beta Chapter, the income to provide scholarships and grants-in-aids to women in science.
